Papilio esperanza (female)

 

Papilio esperanza is a butterfly from Neotropic ecozone (South America). You can observe this butterfly in Mexico. The first description was in 1975 by Beutelspacher. The wingspan is about 9 – 10 cm. Papilio esperanza is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of this butterfly is dark brown or black. Yellow bands and spots dominate the wings. The hind wings have tails.
 The forewings are dark brown or black. A broad, yellow band dominates the wing. At the outer edge there is a chain of little, yellow spots.
The underside of Papilio esperanza is very similar to the upside. But, next to the body there are additional yellow stripes. And the outer edge is orange.
The hind wings of Papilio esperanza are dark brown or black and they have tails. The edge is wavy. A broad, yellow band dominates the wing. At the  outer edge there is a chain of little, yellow spots. At the inner edge there is a red eye-spot.
The underside is orange. The veins are black and yellow bordered. Two black stripes dominate the wing.
The body (abdomen) is black. The thorax is black and has two yellow stripes. The head is black. The underside of all parts is yellow-orange.
