Panacea prola (female)(Red Flasher)
The genus Panacea contains 3 known species, all confined to the neotropics. They are all characterised by having blackish uppersides with extensive iridescent blue / turquoise markings.
The underside hindwings of all species are reddish. In Panacea procilla the hue is dull reddish brown, overlaid with broken wavy black lines and a series of submarginal ocelli. In regina the underside is red, with a vague pattern of blackish markings. The species featured here - Panacea prola, is smaller than regina and has a bright red underside that is devoid of markings.
Panacea prola is distributed throughout much of the lowland rainforest of South America, from Colombia to Ecuador and southern Brazil but is more abundant in southern Peru than anywhere else. Panacea prola, the prola beauty or red flasher, is a species of butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. It is found from Costa Rica to southern Brazil, but is most common in the foothills of the eastern Peruvian Andes.
The wingspan is 65–75 mm. The underside of the hindwings is bright red without markings.
