Parides gundlachianus gundlachianus (male)
Parides gundlachianus occurs in the mountainous eastern part of the island, especially near the coast, where it is met with on flowers, and sometimes also drinking at pools.Parides gundlachianus is a butterfly from Neotropic ecozone (South America). The first description was in 1864 by C. & R. Felder. The wingspan is about 7 – 8 cm. Parides gundlachianus is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of this butterfly is black. Blue bands and red spots dominate the wings. The hind wings have tails. The fore wings are black. In the middle of the wing there is a broad blue band with black veins. Some blue spots are at the wing-tip. The underside of Parides gundlachianus is darkbrown. In the middle of the wing there is a white stripe. Next to the body there is a blue area. The hind wings of Parides gundlachianus are black and they have tails. The edge is wavy. At the outer edge there is a chain of large, red spots. The underside is very similar to the upside. But, there are additional red spots and white marks. The body (abdomen) is black. The thorax is black. The head is black and red. The underside of all parts is black and it has red spots.
