Papilio manlius (male)

 

Papilio manlius is a species of butterfly in the family Papilionidae. It is endemic to Mauritius.
It is found throughout the island because it uses introduced Citrus species as larval food plants.
Papilio manlius is a butterfly from Afrotropic ecozone (Africa). The first description was in 1798 by Fabricius. The wingspan is about 9 – 10 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of Papilio manlius is dark-brown or black. Green spots and areas dominate the wings.  The fore wings are black. A green band dominates the wing. At the wing-tip there are two green spots. The underside is brown.  The hind wings are black and they have very short tails. The edge is wavy. At the outer edge there is a chain of little, green spots. A large, green area dominates the wing. The underside is brown. A chain of little, yellow spots dominates the wing. The body (abdomen) is brown. The thorax and the head are brown. The underside of all parts is brown.
