Graphium antheus

 

Graphium antheus, also called Large-Striped Swordtail is a butterfly from Afrotropic ecozone (Africa). The first description was in 1779 by Cramer. The wingspan is about 9 – 10 cm. Graphium antheus is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of this butterfly is darkbrown or black. Yellow-green spots and stripes dominate the wings. The hind wings have long  The fore wings are darkbrown or black. At the front edge there is a chain of yellow-green stripes. In the middle of the wing there is a chain of large, yellow-green spots. At the outer edge there is a chain of small, yellow-green spots.
The underside of Graphium antheus is very similar to the upside. But, the basic colour is brown.
The hind wings of Graphium antheus are black and they have long tails. The edge is wavy. Many large yellow-green spots dominate the wing. At the outer edge there is a chain of little, yellow-green spots. At the inner edge there is a red eye-spot.
The underside is very similar to the upside. But, the basic colour is brown. There is an additional red-black spot.
The body (abdomen) is black-yellow. The thorax and the head are black-yellow. The underside of all parts is yellowish.
