Papilio delalandei

 

Papilio delalandei is a very interesting butterfly from Afrotropic ecozone (Africa). The first description was in 1823 by Godart. The wingspan is about 9.0 – 10.0 cm. Papilio delalandei is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The butterfly is black with a bizarre yellowish or white band on wings. Hind wings have tails.The forewings are black. At the margin there is a chain of little white spots. In the middle of wing there is a bizarre chain of white spots like a backbone. At the wing leading edge there is a big white spot.
The underside is a copy of upside, but the ground is brown and the big white spot from upside is now a short strip.
The hind wings are black and have long tails. At the margin there is a chain of little white spots. In the middle of wing there is a sequel to the bizarre chain from forewings. In back there is a blue, black and orange eye. The top on tail is white. The underside is copy of upside, but the ground is brown. The body is black.
Sex differences: The female has only a thin big white spot on forewings.
Papilio delalandei is a butterfly of the Afrotropic ecozone (Africa). The distribution is restricted to Madagascar.   Papilio delalandei is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. It is endemic to Madagascar.
