Papilio androgeus androgeus (Female)
Known as the Androgeus Swallowtail, this butterfly is native to the Neotropical ecozone of South America. It was first described in 1775 by Cramer and belongs to the family Papilionidae.
The Papilio androgeus displays a wingspan of approximately 11–12 cm, with rich dark brown upper wings highlighted by broad yellow bands. Its distinctive hindwing tails add elegance and balance to its flight.
This species can be found throughout the Neotropical region, ranging from southern Florida and Mexico down through Brazil and Argentina. The female form, beautifully represented here, showcases a vivid contrast of color and form that reflects the diversity of tropical ecosystems.
